Swiss Watches and Thier History
In the mid-sixteenth century, Swiss watches were first produced in Geneva. In the early 1540’s, there was an injunction on the act of wearing any jewels, then enforced by Jean Calvin: hence, the art of watch making came to the forefront. In less than fifty years, the watch making in Geneva had become such an art form that the area was revered for the creation of its outstanding time pieces. Appreciated for their marked quality, Swiss watches remain amazingly popular even today. Finally, after the passage of another fifty years, Geneva watchmakers began to move out of the area of Geneva, an area that was quickly becoming overpopulated, and migrated into the area known as the Jura Mountains; with the migration, the many of the Geneva watchmakers took their craft with them.

The popularity of Swiss watches grew at an unstoppable pace. By the late 1700’s, Geneva was actually selling more than 60,000 Swiss watches every year. In the 1770s the perpetual watch was created by Abraham-Louis Perrelet: a fine Swiss watch that would precede the self winding watches sold today. Later, in the early 1840’s, Adrien Philippe one of the major founders of Patek Philippe created the pendant winding Swiss watches, calendar watches, chronographs and fine Swiss watches with fly-back hands.
Swiss watches have been on the market for more than 400 hundred years and remain revered for their amazing craftsmanship. A mark of style, many Swiss watches are created for both men and women. Swiss watches are often “firsts” for the industry: the wristwatch, quartz watch, water resistant watch, thinnest watch, smallest watch, and, of course, the most expensive watches were first made by Swiss watch manufacturers. Since Swiss watch manufacturers often create “the firsts” in the watch industry, people have found that Swiss watches are a mark of high fashion.
Luxury Swiss Watches: What’s the Big Deal?
The creation of Swiss watches has become a science for watchmakers in the industry. While some manufacturers of Swiss watches rely on a craftsman to put different parts together within the watches, other watch makers rely on a variety of outside craftsman to help them produce their time pieces. When the Swiss watch is made by one watchmaker only, it is referred to as a manufacture Swiss watch.
The diversity afforded consumers when they are in search for Swiss watches is truly extraordinary. Swiss watches are sold by hundreds of watchmakers around the world, and there is a style and design suitable for every taste. If the shopper is looking for an automatic Swiss watch, a hand-wound Swiss watch, a Swiss watch with quartz movement, an analog Swiss watch, a Digital Swiss watch; the consumer will have little difficulty finding the right watch to purchase. Swiss watches are sold in a variety of styles: Swiss watches are made with precious gems, semi-precious gems, stainless steel backings, wood, as well as other fine, attractive materials. Whether one is looking for an elegant watch or they need something that is completely casual, there is a Swiss watch that can be purchased to meet the fashion needs of the consumer. Does the consumer need a Swiss watch with an alarm, a calendar, or one that is waterproof? Swiss watches are quite practical as well as beautiful.
Why Are Swiss Watches Traditionally Good Ones?
There are particular laws that govern what watches can be considered Swiss made and what watches can have the Swiss made insignia. Swiss watch makers have worked diligently to maintain their amazing reputation and will have nothing thwart the quality of their products. A Swiss watch must have either movement that is Swiss, or the final inspection of the watch has been conducted in Switzerland in order for the watch to earn the “Swiss made” labeling.
Such laws may seem silly at first: what’s the big deal about watches? The fact is that Swiss watchmakers are revered all over the world for their incredibly fine workmanship. To allow competitors to falsely use the terms “Swiss made” on their watches would result in a major catastrophe to the Swiss watchmaker’s reputation. A Swiss watch is more than a watch, it is a cherished timepiece crafted by the finest watchmakers in the world. With this idea in mind, it becomes easy to see why Swiss watchmakers would be so protective of their well earned reputation—the enforcement of such laws ensures that their reputation for quality and beauty in the watch making industry remains intact.
